Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship
The Section of Gastroenterology and the Center for Digestive Health at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health offer a one-year advanced fellowship opportunity that provides extensive training in therapeutic endoscopy. The fellowship focuses on developing a broad knowledge base related to therapeutic endoscopy, an ability to generate relevant differential diagnoses based on history and physical examinations, an understanding of indications and contraindications of therapeutic procedures, and skill at performing these procedures safely and effectively, as well as an appreciation of the humanistic and ethical aspect of medicine.
Led by Fellowship Director Michael Larsen, MD, the faculty consists of physicians who have expertise in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as well as therapeutic endoscopy, including stricture dilation, enteral stent placement, double-balloon enteroscopy, fistula closure, and more. If training in endoscopic ultrasound is desired, the fellow will rotate with faculty who perform endoscopic ultrasound.
The third-tier advanced endoscopy fellow will have completed a three-year residency in internal medicine and an ACGME-approved fellowship in gastroenterology by the start date of the academic fellowship year. The fellow must be eligible for Washington state medical licensure and for privileges to perform routine endoscopic procedures at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, including EGD and colonoscopies. The candidates’ gastroenterology training director must attest to their being on track toward competency/qualifications to perform and be credentialed in basic endoscopy at an independent level. We cannot consider applicants with J1 visa status.
Each January through February, applications are accepted for the academic year beginning 18 months later. No late applications are accepted.
